Utkal Divas: Celebrating the Formation of Odisha
Utkal Divas, also known as Odisha Day, is celebrated every year on April 1st to mark the formation of the state of Odisha. It honors the day in 1936 when Odisha became a separate province, distinct from the Bihar and Orissa province. This day holds special significance for us as the people of Odisha, it symbolizes our struggle for identity, language, and culture.
The celebration of Utkal Divas is not just about remembering the historical event but also about honoring the rich heritage, art, and culture of the state. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by many leaders and the resilience of the Odia people.
The Historical Background of Utkal Divas
Before Odisha became an independent state, it was part of the Bihar and Orissa province under British rule. Despite having a different language and culture, the people of Odisha were merged with Bihar, which led to cultural and administrative challenges.
The demand for a separate province began gaining momentum in the early 20th century. Leaders like Madhusudan Das, Gopabandhu Das, Krushna Chandra Gajapati, and Fakir Mohan Senapati and others played pivotal roles in advocating for a distinct Odia-speaking state.
After years of struggle and persistent efforts, Odisha was officially declared an independent province on April 1, 1936. The province initially had six districts: Cuttack, Puri, Balasore, Sambalpur, Ganjam, and Koraput. Later, more regions were added, shaping the present-day Odisha.

Let’s Unite for a Stronger Odisha
Odisha is not just Eastern Odisha or Western Odisha (Koshal), it is one united land of Sri Jagannath, art, culture, and heritage. While regional differences exist, they should never divide us. Instead of focusing on what separates us, let’s celebrate what unites us: our language, traditions, festivals, and shared history.

As I write this post, the ongoing debate between Eastern and Western Odisha comes to my mind. So, I feel it’s important to address this here. Utkal Divas is not just about remembering the past but about shaping a stronger and brighter future for Odisha. Progress is possible only when we stand together, respecting each region’s uniqueness and working towards a developed and prosperous Odisha.
Whether through preserving our traditions, supporting local artisans, or contributing to the state’s growth, each of us has a role to play in honoring the legacy of Utkal. Let’s rise above differences and build a future where every Odia feels valued, respected, and proud of our great state. United we stand, divided we fall—Bande Utkala Janani!
