The Special Charm of Phurlijharan
What makes Phurlijharan Waterfall special is its peaceful and magical vibe. The water comes from the Karlapat Wildlife Sanctuary, a place known for its variety of plants and animals. The waterfall flows over rocks, creating a natural spring at the bottom. The cool breeze and clear water make the place feel fresh and relaxing.
People living nearby believe that the water has healing properties because of the minerals in the rocks. Whether or not this is true, taking a dip in the cool water is refreshing and enjoyable. Believe me I have enjoyed this cool water dipping with my friends in the year of 2011. But currently, It’s not possible. Because the local authority has placed some steel barricades focusing on the visitor’s safety.

Tips for Visitors
Plan Your Trip: While the waterfall is easy to reach, it’s good to plan ahead, especially during busy tourist seasons.
Pack Smart: Carry water, snacks or foods and try to avoid high heels sandals, just wear comfortable walkable footwears. There you might find some monkeys but they are good and only you require to stay careful if holding any food items.
Respect Nature: Keep the area clean and avoid littering by using dustbins. Remember to respect the cultural sentiments of the locals.
Be Careful: Stay focused while walking on the stairs specially, at the second turn after crossing the right sided Big Rock and always try to hold on handrails. Also, the rocks near the waterfall can be slippery, so walk carefully.
Other Places: In the same SH- 44 road you will find two more new places. I recommend that after visiting the waterfall, then you should go ahead on the same path for the spot ‘Zakam’. And after that while returning you must visit one of the best parks in the region named ‘Bhagirathi Park’.
How to Reach Phurlijharan Waterfall
Phurlijharan is well-connected by road and only 15 kilometers away from Bhawanipatna. One can be easily reached with the help of public or private vehicles from the city Bus Stand.
If you’re traveling by train, the nearest railway station is Bhawanipatna Railway Station. From there, you can take local buses, hire taxis, or use auto-rickshaws to reach the waterfall site conveniently.
For those traveling by air, the closest airport is Swami Vivekananda Airport in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, about 260 kilometers away.
However, if you plan to explore more places in Odisha, I highly recommend choosing Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar. From Bhubaneswar, you can reach Bhawanipatna by train or bus, adding more opportunities to discover Odisha’s beauty along the way.
I’d like to share a personal note here. “Over the past 15 years, I’ve visited this place numerous times, and I must say, the SH-44 roads have never let me down. They’re smooth and well-maintained, making the journey enjoyable every time. This is one of those underrated details that often go unnoticed but deserves appreciation.
A big thanks to the previous state government especially under the leadership of Shri Naveen Patnaik for their consistent efforts in developing and maintaining this beautiful waterfall and its surroundings over the years. Also, I am hopeful that the current government will continue this process to preserve and enhance this wonderful destination.”
Where to Stay
If you have your relatives in the Bhawanipatna town or in Kalahandi district then there would be no issues for you about where to stay. But if you are travelling from other cities or states then mostly you required to stay somewhere. In that case don’t worry you will find good hotels near to the city bus stand area and also, on the way to the waterfall.
But if you travel with your family or by yourself and you like to spend some quality time within the crowdless, peaceful nature surrounded area then I would recommend that you should give a try to Rabandhara, Eco-Tourism Cottage by the state government of Odisha.
The Nature Camp, Eco-Tourism Cottage is located nearly 10 kilometers away from the city. They provide well furnished AC rooms for staying with 24/7 connecting power and hot water supply. Also, provide the food covering your breakfast, lunch and dinner.
